Updates from Kip and Denise - June 2008

May 26th, 2008:                           Notes from the first mate:

It was a sad day as we left the Riverside Marina and said goodbye to our friends. After seven months of being in a marina (except for the short trip we took to Great Barrier Island in February) it was time to leave and head out towards warmer weather as New Zealand was getting colder and heading into winter. We quickly settled in for the long passage, looking forward to our radio nets each night at 1800 hrs. to see how our friends making the same passage were doing. As we got further away from New Zealand the water and air tempertures slowly went up and after 4 days we were back in shorts and tank tops. The anticipation of our arrival in our next port rises as we get closser, its another new country with new cultures which we look forward to exploring.

May 26th. 2008:                 Departure Port: Whangarei New Zealand, 14:00 May 12th, 2008
                                          Port O'call: Savusavu Fiji 18:30 May 20th, 2008
                                          Trip: 1265 nm/ Wind speeds 10 - 25kts / Temp 68-80 / Water 68-84

After 7 months in Whangarei a weather window has arrived and it's time to fuel up and leave for Fiji. Clearing out of New Zealand, we were undersail and heading north to warmer country. As we were sailing along the coast line a distressed call came over the VHF from a small fishing vessel who sent up a flare to show us his position. We relayed to message to the coast guard which soon came to their rescue. We set in for a rather wet crossing with the wind on our beam and occasional splash into the cockpit as we reached speeds of over 9 kts. Overall we had a good passage and a fairly quick one. Seven and half days at sea we motored only 27hrs, and as we got closer to Savusavu we had to slow Adelia down in order to arrive during daylight hours.

May 11th, 2008:                           Notes from the first mate:

Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms (Mums as the Kiwis say) I hope you have a wonderful day. It's official we leave New Zealand Monday May 12th around 1200 hrs. We look forward to fair winds and a smooth passage as we make our way towards Fiji. We want you all to know that we are not alone out there, there are many other boats leaving for the same destination and we keep in touch with each other via single sideband radio. We monitor channels 4024 LSB at 1800 hrs and 8101 at 1814 everyday and give each other weather and position reports. New Zealand is a great place to visit and I would encourage you all to see it. Fair winds and following seas to everyone sailing with us.

May 2nd, 2008:                           Notes from the first mate:

As we quickly approach our departure from New Zealand to start our 2008 cruising season, I wanted to give you an overview of our 2006-07 adventure. We covered 10,003 miles, traveled 1 yr 2 days, visited 8 Countries, 23 Islands. We are looking forward to this season of cruising and we hope you will enjoy it as well.

April 12th, 2008:                         Notes from the first mate:

Another month has gone by, time is sure going fast. We hauled Adelia out of the water a few days ago and put two coats of paint on the bottom. We will probably be out of the water for a few more days getting other things done. I have finally redone my front page as I promised, I'm sure the new menu will work better than the last one. If any of you find errors on the web site please please send an email so I can correct them.

March 3rd, 2008:                      Notes from the first mate:

Well I think it's about time I get this web site active again, it's been quite a busy 4 months, Kip & I both left Adelia for a while and traveled back to the US and I to Canada to visit our family and friends. We enjoyed spending the holiday season back home and loved seeing all our family and friends but it's great to be back aboard Adelia. We also appreciate the hospitality that everyone extended us, and want to thank my sister Marie and our friend Terri in Ventura who opened her home to us for over a month. We've both been back since mid Feb and have been busy cleaning and doing repairs on Adelia. We enjoyed a week at Great Barrier Island with our friend Howard from Ventura and Terry & Violet on the SV Southwind III from Vancouver. Great Barrier Island is a must for those of you who love to hike, especially off season. Howard has left us to tour the South Island & and Kip & I are busy preparing for our next crossing to Fiji which should be around the end of April or early May.

While I was in the US and Canada I looked at my web site on a lot of different computer screens and discovered that my fancy opening page menu does not work very well on most so I am in the process of restructuring the front page in hopes to make it simply for all of you to follow our voyage. We are looking forward to our second cruising of sailing and hope you all will come with us. While we are in New Zealand, we hope to visit the more of the North Island & South Island.

February 24th. 2008:          Departure Port: Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island, 07:20 Feb. 24th, 2008
Port O'call: 14:20 Marsden Point, Urquharts Bay, Feb. 24th, 2008
                                          Trip: 42 nm/ Wind speeds 15 - 25kts / Temp 75 / Water 76

We left on a blustery rainy morning sailing on a close reach on coarse. Howard took the helm going over 8kts at times. As we approached the mouth of the river, we met very strong currents coming out and decided to motor to our anchorage. We dropped anchor in 10m fairly protected from the wind. We pulled up anchor at 09:30 and made our way to the Riverside Dr. Marina pulling in at 11:45 on high tides.

February 20th. 2008:          Departure Port: Marsden Point, Urquharts Bay, 07:00 Feb. 20th, 2008
Port O'call: 17:30 Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island Feb. 20th, 2008
                                          Trip: 42 nm/ Wind speeds 15 - 25kts / Temp 75 / Water 76

Heading into the wind with seas going out, I logged a trip plan with the Whangarei Coast Guard confirming three on board myself, Denise & Howard. Under sail right away, reaching as close as I could but still could not keep us on a strait course. We had a great sail, tacking once to get around Little Barrier Island. We motored the last few miles and dropped anchor in 14m at Port Fitzroy Bay.

February 19th. 2008:          Departure Port: Riverside Dr. Marina Whangarei, 17:30 Feb. 19th, 2008
Port O'call: Marsden Point, Urquharts Bay 20:30 Feb. 19th, 2008
                                          Trip: 12 nm/ Wind speeds 15 - 25kts / Temp 75 / Water 76

We left the Marina two hours before high tide and got stuck in the mud by Dockland 5 when we tried to go around a boat anchored in the middle of the channel. We backed out of it and proceeded without any more problems. We dropped anchor in 16m on shale bottom. A windy night but flat sees.

October 28th, 2007:                  Notes from the first mate:

I can't believe a year has past since we left Channel Islands Harbor Oct 22, 2006. We have had a tremendous amount of wonderful experiences and made a lot good friends. Now we look forward to spending time with our family and friends in the next few months then returning to New Zealand and do some land and coastal touring. We are happy to take a break especially since the last passage was the toughest one to date. We will keep Adelia in the Whangarei Marina New Zealand until the end of June 2008.

H&S Clients are Living The Dream – Adélia Sails!

Kip and Denise had the same dream that many boaters have of moving fulltime onto their boat and cruising the world; the difference is that they went for it! They rigged their dream, trimmed it, and were jubilant when that dream filled with wind and began to sail! Currently Kip and Denise are aboard “Adelia”, their Jeanneau 49 Deck Salon, and are cruising their way from the Mexican mainland to the Galapagos Islands.
Their story began as only a dream the day they boarded their friend Howard's sailboat (Quan Yin) for a day sail off the Santa Barbara Coast in August 1999. They were hooked! By November 2001 they had taken delivery of their first sailboat, a Hunter 37.6 that they named Merlot. After just over a year of fun aboard Merlot they decided to upgrade to a Hunter 44 Deck Salon. Denise shares that “we had many wonderful sailing trips on both of our first sailboats but decided we needed something a little bigger with a different interior layout for the extended cruises we were planning.” Looking back they noted that the first step into turning their dream of sailing into a reality took place when they sold their home in Oak View, California. They moved back into a rental they owned in Ventura, California that they remodeled and sold. They were now ready to move fulltime onto their sailboat. Mike Harker - Circumnavigatin the Globe

Mike has bought a few boats from us. In a Hunter 46 he purchased from us, he crossed the Pacific twice and the Atlantic twice. He sold his Hunter 46 and stepped up to a Hunter 49 in which he circumnavigated the globe in only 12 months. But there is alot more to his story than just that. Mike is also paralyzed below the knee, but that doesn''t slow him down.

You can view his video here!

You can read more about his incredible story at:

TheSailingChannel.TV brings you Wanderlust 3's year-long circumnavigation with skipper/filmmaker Mike Harker. Mike is sailing aboard a brand new Hunter 49 tricked out with the full range of modern electronics and cruising gear. Mike departed in March 2007 from the Miami Sailboat Show. Terry and Michelle on Coastal Passage II

Many of you may have met Terry before. He is one of our skippers and has also been at our sailboat rendezvous events at Catalina. You may have even read their liveaboard story in San Diego Magazine. An incredibly nice couple who are living the dream, sailing on the Pacific coast and currently in Mexico. Here are some updates from their trip.

May 28, 2008 - Hello to all from Nuevo Vallarta. Coastal Passage has found a home during hurricane season in Paradise Village Marina, Nuevo Vallarta.

We have visited many wonderful locations through out Mexico during the last seven months. Lush tropical anchorages along the Mexico mainland and areas in the Sea Of Cortez that are dry and barren, reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. Coastal Passage performed very well sailing and providing comfort while at anchor. Problems with the systems were few and usually caused by operator error. The experience has been wonderful as well as the many people we have met along the way.

We look forward to our visit to San Diego in June and visiting with family as well as friends. We will return to Mexico towards the end of July.
Doing necessary maintenance projects and enjoying the area in a very hot and high humidity paradise.

s/v Coastal Passage II

May 6, 2008 - Hola,

Hello to everyone from the Sea Of Cortez. We are currently on a mooring in Puerto Escondido, which is just a few miles south of Loreto. Loreto Fest kicks off on May 1 and runs through May 4. It is put on by the Hidden Bay Yacht Club. There are games (bocci ball, over the line, horseshoes, dominoes, card games) food (pancake breakfast, hot dogs, spaghetti dinner and a BBQ put on by a local mexican family). About seventy to ninety boats are here for this event. This is probably as far north into the Sea Of Cortez that we will go this year before we start our journey back south to Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta (next to Puerto Vallarta) where we will keep the boat during Hurricane season. We have seen many beautiful places on the Mexican Mainland as well as in the Sea Of Cortez and the friendly local people of the villages have made this cruising season something to remember. We have made many friends along the way and look forward to staying in touch and seeing them in anchorages in the future. We plan to be in Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta by June 1st. Michelle will fly to San Diego on June 7th and I will be bringing a power boat up to San Diego departing P.V. June 8th and being in San Diego hopefully by June 15th (weather permitting). We will be in San Diego for about a month and then return to Mexico to do maintenance and a few projects on Coastal Passage. Yes we do have air conditioning aboard, as it gets quite warm with high humidity during the summer months down here. We look forward to visiting with family and friends during our stay in San Diego.

James Fabrick on "The Gecko"

Hi everyone... Hope you are all well... The Captain and his Mrs. Are both doing well in their perspective hemispheres..! Communication for Jim has been a challenge at best.. :-(. Before he left he went to Verizon to get a new international cell phone, and does it work?? Not!! A very long story, but a week and a half later, still no service... Best you don't here it from him as his expletives are rather strong!! Can't imagine, right? He and I are able to touch base via satellite email when all conditions are right and are trying to problem solve this way... The good news is... He is fine and doing well. Here are a few excerpts from him last few emails...

*Sunday, June 8th "Today, Sunday, we are confined to the boat, as the Gendarme (French Authorities) are not available to check in. Tomorrow, Monday, we'll check in. Small town here, a road around the bay, chic hotel, variety of stores and stuff, will know more after going ashore. The arrival, going alongside the island before turning into the anchorage, was everything you'd expect on arrival at a South Sea island. Big, rugged, volcanic, and green, with rising cliffs, and lots of black lava rock with plants clinging.
Hard to believe."

*******************************************************

Hi everybody! Just wanted to let you know that I talked with Jim via satellite phone this am.. All is well aboard Gecko.. As you would guess..
Tired of the food, boat is constantly moving, and sleep is almost non existent.... A very long haul. He joked about wanting his wife, cat, Starbucks, and believe it or not,,, a round of golf. :-) He figures they are about half way now. He says to tell all hi!! Have a great day.. Jan

**********************************************************

I returned to the GECKO Tues, May 13th, to prepare for our departure for the So. Pacific. Leaving with me will be Greg (the WIZ) Eric, and Dave. they arrive Thurs. afternoon. After provisioning and fueling Fri. I expect to get underway Saturday morning.
With this in mind, I laid my head on my pillow tuesday night and wondered "WHAT THE HELL AM I THINKING". I going to leave my wife and cat, my house in Laguna, a perfectly nice lifestyle, for what? Pain and suffering on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean? I got over it though, and am now preparing to boat for the big adventure. Stay tuned, I'm hoping this will be fun for us all. Jim s/v GECKO For those of you who may want to follow the GECKO across the Pacific, go to "Pacific Seafarers Net" and check "roll call" We should be there. Hi all.. Heard from Jim... He was on the 6-9p watch, then radio check in at 10p. Crew and captain are doing well. Wind favorable for 4 days now with comfortable sailing.. Attached is something "the boat wizzards" friend and my brother-in-law, Rich, are doing to map the passage.. Enjoy!! Jan
