There are many wonderful boating destinations among the Californian
coastline. We’ve compiled some of our favorites for your boating
pleasure.
SANTA BARBARA
Between Santa Barbara’s rugged, Mediterranean-like mountains and the beautiful Channel Islands lies a quite little harbor that has provided boaters a safe haven for almost a century. In 1872 John Stearns built a wharf to sustain his logging business and opened Santa Barbara’s waterfront. Since then, the wharf has withstood everything nature could throw at it, from fires to 100-year storms. Stearns Wharf survived it all, and today it is the oldest, continuously-working wooden wharf in California. In the 1920s, a man named Max Fleishmann began constructing a harbor west of the wharf for his 250’ yacht, the “Haida”. Construction was completed in 1928, and ever since Santa Barbara Harbor has provided both shelter and a gateway to the many activities Santa Barbara has to offer.

Located 100 miles nearly due West of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara Harbor is home to over 1000 pleasure and commercial vessels ranging from 20 ft to 150 ft. There is a 500-yard breakwater NE of Point Castillo, extending to a long sandbar on the south side of the harbor. The harbor happens to be the last stop available before rounding Point Conception.

While cruising visit the Maritime Museum or stop by the Brophy Bros. Restaurant and Clam Bar for a bite to eat. Other exciting activities include: kayaking, surfing, fishing, windsurfing, biking and many more. A popular attraction within the marina is the Ty Warner Sea Center, an engaging marine learning experience located right on Stearns Wharf. Downtown is just minutes from the harbor and a short taxi or bus ride will have you touring the town in no time. While in the area stop by the famous State Street, where there are a number of award winning restaurants and fashionable shops. For more dining information visit http://www.santabarbara.com/dining/
The harbor also provides dry docks, marine supply shops, fuel docks, service stations and guest slips. It is home to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the Santa Barbara Sailing Club. Surrounding the harbor there are parks, shops and rental facilities for any number of exciting activities from jet skiing to windsurfing.
Santa Barbara Harbor is a great place to stop by, whether for a weekend or longer. It is safe to say that after one visit you will surely return to this secluded jewel of a harbor.
