New Marina Opening in San Diego! Pier 32 in National City.

Look at all of those new empty slips!  Are you one of the many San Diegans waiting for a slip opening in a resort marina?  H&S Yacht Sales is proud to announce the construction of San Diego Bay’s newest resort marina in over 15 years!
The name of the new marina is Pier 32 and is scheduled for completion during the spring/summer of 2007! Pier 32 is located at the mouth of the Sweetwater Channel as it enters into San Diego Bay in National City. The Marina building will be located just North of the docks, adjacent to beautiful Pepper Park. Water access is via the Sweetwater Channel at the SW corner of the marina. The marina has electronic key access and night security will patrol the docks and facilities. Tenants will have access to the finest state-of-the-art waterfront facilities in San Diego Bay, which include: minutes from downtown San Diego, Bellingham dock system, deluxe shower rooms, spacious laundry facilities, an exercise/workout center, a boater’s lounge & community room, a resort Jacuzzi, high speed internet, phone connections, full service delicatessen, an aquatic center, and a public launch ramp.
Slip fees will be based on the over-all length of the vessel or slip size, whichever is greater – however, the rates have not yet been determined and will be announced in the near future.  The marina will have slips that are 28’, 36’, 44’, 52’, and 60’ in length.  The live-aboard fee and the price for side ties have not yet been determined.  The electricity will be metered while the water will be included in the cost of the slip.  The security deposit will be equivalent to one month’s rent and the application process includes: current documentation or registration, current insurance stating that the marina is also insured, a current color photograph, and a credit check.  We encourage you to visit their website http://www.pier32marina.com/ for information on how to get on their waiting list and start the application process.
H&S Yacht Sales is honored to welcome Pier 32 to the San Diego boating family.  We are excited for all of the additional access to the beautiful San Diego Bay that the coming of Pier 32 will offer to boat owners.

Hunter 44DS - American Style and Performance
By Jerry Naissoy

The Hunter 44DS originally debuted in 2003 as the Hunter 426DS, Glenn Henderson's second design for Hunter Marine following his great success with the 356, which later became the 36. In it's second year of production, the aft stateroom was redesigned to accommodate a fore and aft semi-island queen berth, and the name was changed to its current, 44DS as part of a new marketing direction.

As you approach this yacht the first thing you'll say is, "this is one very big boat!" You'll be right. While she is large you should not assume her hard to handle or that she might be slow quite the contrary. The 44DS is a fin keel, spade rudder boat. The rudder is very large and the keel is long. These factors, along with a very large sail plan, make her a cinch to dock and a breeze to sail, not to mention, fast!

Structurally, you will be comforted knowing this boat is built using a grid system that keeps the hull strong and rigid when pounding through the seaway. The bulkheads are glassed to the hull for further strength and torsional rigidity, and the hull to deck joints are through-bolted every eight inches after being joined with a generous layer of 3M® 5200. Hunter Marine uses lead keels and the bottom from the keel to the bow is reinforced with Kevlar® for added protection from submerged or floating objects. It is nice to know the manufacturer thought these things through before you needed them. Hopefully you never will!

As you step aboard from either the transom or through the lifeline gates and enter the cockpit you'll immediately feel comfortable. The cockpit is rather large and has a fold down table mounted on a stainless steel frame that doubles as a foot brace while sailing to weather. As part of the Mariner Package, the boat is equipped with a folding leather wrapped steering wheel. Folding it provides easy movement around the cockpit and the leather keeps your hands from freezing on cool days. The Harken® traveler is mounted on the stainless steel arch overhead with control lines within arm's length of the helm. The Lewmar® two-speed self-tailing genoa winches are also mounted near the helm for easy access while short-handed sailing. All lines are lead aft to the cockpit and with the Furlex® furling jib and Selden® in-mast furling mainsail, there is little reason to ever leave the cockpit unless you absolutely want to.

When you enter the interior of the boat, you'll love the companionway doors, which are so much more convenient than hatch boards. They have latches so they stay open when you want them to and you can lock them from both the inside and outside for your security. As you step down into the boat, the steps are wide and flat to make it easy for carrying provisions or gear into the boat. The "L" shaped galley is to port and boasts huge, uncluttered, Corian® counter tops that are very wide. There is a Force Ten® three-burner stove with oven, a microwave, an under counter refrigerator and separate freezer, wet dish rack, lots of storage and a pantry. A gourmet chef will feel comfortable in the likes of this great galley!

To starboard at the bottom of the companionway steps is the aft head. It is well lighted and has its own shower stall with a glass door. There is an entry to the head from both the saloon and the aft cabin for convenience and privacy.

The aft cabin is entered through a door just aft of the head and has a centerline queen size berth so you can get in and out of bed without disturbing your partner in the middle of the night. There is large cedar lined hanging locker to starboard as you enter the cabin and another on the port side next to a nice seating area. There is also a well lighted vanity on the forward bulkhead. All in all, this is a very roomy comfortable cabin!

As you move forward in the boat to the main saloon you'll feel as if the boat has cathedral ceilings and skylights. There is no problem with headroom here and the boat is bright and airy with lots of opening hatches. The navigation station is just forward of the head to starboard with large table that opens allowing a place to store charts, dividers, pencils, parallel rulers, etc., for all your navigational needs. Forward on the table is a nice teak mounting pod for any electronics you might care to add. The electrical panel for both AC and DC is to your immediate right as you sit at the chart table.

Just forward is a very comfortable couch with a large drawer under it for more storage. The couch sits directly across from a huge saloon table where you could easily host a three couple dinner. The table comes with a leaf so its size can be reduced when there are just the two of you. The saloon table also converts to a berth when extra guests are aboard.

Going into the forward cabin there is a small step down and a head to port. Again, it is well lighted and has its own shower stall with a glass door. We have ordered most boats with quite flush heads (electric heads) that use fresh water so you don't get that seawater smell. They work like a champ. Immediately to starboard is a large hanging locker and shelves, cedar lined of course. The V-berth is huge and cozy with shelving on both sides and more storage underneath. Either forward or aft cabin could be considered the master; they are both great.

The boat is powered by a Yanmar 56 hp diesel engine that will move the boat along at nine knots when the wind quits. If you feel the need for speed, there's an optional 75 hp turbo-diesel! Under sail she is an absolute beauty, extremely well mannered with a well balanced helm and fast. In 15 knots of wind with the boat well trimmed she'll go to weather at 8 knots and about 15° of heel. I've sailed her at over 10 knots when reaching. When the wind pipes up, just furl in the main right from the cockpit, re-trim and keep going. The 44DS is a delight to sail whether it's blowing 5 knots or 35 knots and is gorgeous below.

You'll feel proud while entertaining your guests aboard this beautiful yacht, not to mention the joy you'll experience having such a fine vessel as you cruise to your next port of call.

Maintenance Tips!
Getting ready for the Summer Season

Summer Boating Goes More Smoothly With This Spring Commissioning Checklist
To help boaters have a trouble-free summer boating season, BoatU.S., the nation's largest recreational boating association, has a spring commissioning checklist. Whether you have a power or sailboat, inboard or outboard, following this checklist is an easy way to get ready for the season.

BEFORE YOU LAUNCH:

  1. Inspect and lubricate seacocks. Hoses and hose clamps should be inspected and replaced as necessary.
  2. Replace deteriorated zincs.
  3. Inspect prop(s) for dings, pitting and distortion. Make sure cotter pins are secure. Grip the prop and try moving the shaft - if it's loose, the cutlass bearing may need to be replaced.
  4. Check to make sure the rudderstock hasn't been bent.
  5. Inspect the hull for blisters, distortions and stress cracks.
  6. Make sure your engine intake sea strainer is free of corrosion and properly secured.
  7. Check the engine shaft and rudder stuffing boxes for looseness. After the boat is launched, be sure to check these as well as through-hulls for leaks.
  8. Use a hose to check for deck leaks at ports and hatches. Renew caulk or gaskets as necessary.

OUTDRIVES and OUTBOARD ENGINES:

  1. Inspect rubber outdrive bellows for cracked, dried and/or deteriorated spots (look especially in the folds), and replace if suspect.
  2. Check power steering and power trim oil levels. Replace worn-out zincs.
  3. Inspect outer jacket of control cables. Cracks or swelling indicate corrosion and mean that the cable has to be replaced.

ENGINES AND FUEL SYSTEMS:

  1. Inspect fuel lines, including fill and vent hoses, for softness, brittleness or cracking. Check all joints for leaks and make sure all lines are well supported with non-combustible clips or straps with smooth edges.
  2. Inspect fuel tanks, fuel pumps and filters for leaks. Clamps should be snug and free of rust. Clean fuel filters.
  3. Inspect cooling hoses and fittings for stiffness, rot, leaks and/or cracking. Make sure they fit snugly and are double-clamped.
  4. Every few years, remove and inspect exhaust manifold for corrosion.
  5. Clean and tighten electrical connections, especially both ends of battery cables. Wire-brush battery terminals and fill cells with distilled water (if applicable).
  6. Inspect bilge blower hose for leaks.

SAILBOAT RIGGING:

  1. Inspect fittings for cracks and rust. Inspect wire halyards and running backstays for "fishhooks" and rust.
  2. Remove tape on turnbuckles and lubricate threads, preferably with Teflon. Replace old tape with fresh tape.
  3. Recaulk through-deck chainplates as necessary (generally, once a decade).

TRAILERS:

  1. Inspect tire treads and sidewalls for cracks or lack of tread and replace as necessary. Check air pressure. Don't forget the spare!
  2. Inspect bearings and repack as necessary.
  3. Test tail and back-up lights. Test winch to make sure it's working properly.
  4. Inspect trailer frame for rust. Sand and paint to prevent further deterioration.

MISCELLANEOUS:

  1. Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers.
  2. Check stove and remote tanks for loose fittings and leaking hoses.
  3. Inspect bilge pump and float switch to make sure it's working properly.
  4. Inspect dock and anchor lines for chafing.
  5. Update or replace old charts, waterway guides.
  6. Check shore power cable connections for burns, which indicates the cable needs to be replaced.
  7. Make sure your boating license and/or registration is up to date. Don't forget your trailer tags.
  8. Review your boat insurance policy and update coverage if needed. Be sure you have fuel spill insurance coverage.

Make sure you have a properly sized and wearable life jackets in good condition for each passenger, including kids and pets

Waterspots

It’s time to get your boat ready for the summer season! Tidy up her deck, give her a good bath, wax her until she sparkles, and then proudly show her off to all who cruise by. But wait, those pesky little water spots just don’t seem to go away! The regular washing, waxing, and drying with a soft towel of your boat will definitely help to prevent water spots from forming – but many times won’t be enough to get rid of the water spots that are already present. The removal of water spots calls for tougher action and we have provided a list of tips that will help you get rid of these tenacious little blemishes.

1) Use a homemade vinegar and water solution to get rid of the water spots. Mix one gallon of water with one cup of vinegar and then rub the water spots with a soft cloth that has been dipped in this solution. A few applications may be required before spots are removed. Note that after this use your wax will most likely be gone. Don't forget to re-wax.

2) Use BABE’S Spot Solver to get rid of the water spots. This product is specifically developed to remove hard water spots caused from mineral build-up. BABE'S Spot Solver is a non-abrasive solution designed for all gel-coat, glass and chrome surfaces.

3) Use Iosso Fiberglass Reconditioner to get rid of the water spots. This product can be used for more than removing water spots. It restores color to faded fiberglass as well as removes: oxidation, chalking, water-lines, tars, and oils.

A&Product_Code=0001&Category_Code=Marine-RV-Awning

4) Use Lime Away or CLR to get rid of the water spots.
These are more aggressive products, and should be used only for the more severe cases of neglect.

Before any of the above methods and products are used in attempting to remove water spots, make sure to read all applicable directions and then test the cleaner on a small area of the hull. We recommend that the cleaners are not applied in direct sunlight but rather in a cool or shady area.
